President Obama's austerity budget includes "$861.5 million for the Smithsonian Institution, an increase of $100 million over the Smithsonian's last appropriation, in fiscal year 2010," and, for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, "an overall budget of $308 million for 2012, up from $168 million in 2010," the New York Times notices.
The Heritage Foundation notes that the Obama budget also increases federal education spending: "If the President's request is enacted, the agency's budget will have increased 57 percent in the past decade alone – after adjusting for inflation – from $49 billion in 2000 to $69.7 billion in 2008 and to $77.4 billion in 2012."
This is fiscal belt-tightening, Washington style.
