In an election on Tuesday, Los Angeles voters rejected, 55 percent to 44 percent, a proposal to increase the city sales tax to 9.5 percent from 9 percent, NBC News reports.
The city's mayor and the police chief had both supported the tax increase, Measure A, which was described on the ballot as the "neighborhood public safety and vital city services funding and accountability measure."
At least Los Angeles voters had a chance to vote directly on the tax increase, which is more than can be said for a lot of other plans raise taxes.
