In a lot of the other professions other motivations also come in. Wall Street is all about greed read F.I.A.S.C.O. and see this. It's all about a bigger bonus than the next guy. The customer is unimportant and assumed to be a big boy able to take care of himself (see Blankfein). Gordon Gekko resonates because a lot of folks see the character as having all the bad habits of wall street. Wall Street is nothing but a toll collector sucking money from the pockets of investors. High Frequency trading is designed to shaft the little guy for bigger bonuses for the traders and companies. It is interesting that after the flash crash money has been flowing out of mutual funds as people more and more decide that Wall Street is a rigged casino. Of course in a casino the winner is always the house.
