Please note that slaves also freed themselves. Sometimes by running away, sometimes by making slavery less profitable through malingering, conversely by being a very productive hence valuable slave able to ask for benefits, and during the Civil War, by renegotiating the terms of their slavery (because the slave owner didn't have the resources to enforce the old rules).

And contra the people who think that slavery ended with the Civil War, think about tenant farming, and Jim Crow laws, and lynchings. You can reasonably argue that slavery continued through the 1960's and 70's.
