(I would assume unionized labor was in effect raising costs as well as inflation.) So the government takes over and what does it do? It raises prices. So no one could figure out how to run it and keep costs down. I do not know if public transit would work if the state stepped out and taxpayers weren't force to subsidize the MTA. I suspect it might slowly collapse, and the solution would involve buses/vans. On the other hand if all unionization was removed, and taxes, and other mandated costs, it might work just fine.
