John Adams (the second president) thought that manhood sufferage would be the downfall of the republic, as did the Federalists who died out due to this in the "era of good feeling" The US had just fought the war of 1812 and men who could not vote due to not holding sufficient property demanded the vote because they had served in the militia. If they go that way the GOP may go the way of the Federalists, Plus the desire to secede by New England Federalists in 1814 came just as the war ended making the Federalists look more like fools.
