This seems to be a Western-wide pathology. At least, it's well documented in Great-Britain. In Greece, too. There was one village (or island) with an astonishing number of blind people. This being Southern Europe, welfare-dodgers apparently stretch it further than Britons, who tend to prefer depression or back pain.

I'm sure you'd discover signs of this all over the world if you'd care to research the issue.
