The whole issue between Hamilton and Jefferson/Madison has continued to be roil politics ever since. After all Hamilton favored protecting industries and Jefferson favored lower tariffs. Or consider the issue of who should be able to vote. Recall that John Adams(2) said that universal male sufferage would be the downfall of the republic. I contend that bunches of problems some of which date back to Rome remain unsettled, and to think that this generation is smarter than all that came before it is hubris.
