Not a Faculty Position

Reader comment on: Preet Bharara to NYU Law

Bharara's position may be an "academic" position in the sense that he's employed by a university, but it is not a *faculty* position. That is, he is not a member of the faculty entitled to vote and participate in the governance of the law school. He cannot hold himself out as a "professor of law" because he has this position. It takes a long time to make an offer of a faculty position (there are applicable rules from the ABA, which accredits law schools). It takes nothing more than a letter from the dean to hire into a position like Bharara is getting. It's not extraordinary at all that a law school with a lot of money, like NYU, could do this in ten days.
