Before the Civil war newspapers were often even owned by political parties. However the invention and spread of the steam powered press increased the barriers to entry so that the newspapers had to rely on ads to pay their costs. Once you rely on adds you can't afford to turn potential readers of the ads off because the advertisers will go elsewhere. The last real opinionated press was Hearst and whipping the US into the spanish american war. (let alone talk about the FCC barriers to getting a 4th network news source etc.,) Suddenly the barriers to entry have shrunk and the political news has returned.
