inequality vs. growth

NYT: "the elimination has had no effect on inequality, and there are signs it has actually spurred growth." So "inequality" is the opposite of "growth"? Or inequality occurs in the absence of growth? Or the two are unrelated, but the Times implies some pretend correlation? Someone help me here.
