Reader comment on: Fewer Givers, More Takers

It would stand to reason that if everyone is either a giver or a taker that the givers would far outnumber the takers. Why? Because the wealthy earn so much more and their share of the national income continues to grow. So long as the spread between the richest and poorest widens, more people will end up as receivers, and this is a very good thing. The top tax rate should be far higher than it is today to combat the absurdity of what many of the wealthiest make. Our tax system is far less progressive than it needs to be. How can one rationalize the five Walton siblings sitting on tens of billions of dollars for doing nothing, while hard working Americans the country over struggle to afford healthcare, buy school supplies or put food on the table. Would the Waltons work any less hard if their top tax rate increased (say it kicked in at 50% at 1 million dollars in earnings)? Seeing as they don't work now, I think it probably wouldn't change their calculus at all. . .
