Reader comment on: The Latest Sugary Drink Backlash

Submitted by Lyle (United States), Nov 9, 2009 08:17

Soft drinks were relativly more expensive then, and did not exist in schools. (At least the ones I went to in MI). Soft drinks were only introduced into the dorm at college in 1970 or so. Again this is because relatively they became much cheaper. Did there used to be free refills at restaraunts? Not on soft drinks, just iced tea. Note that drinks came in at most a 12 oz bottle, and 6 was the common size. So is it possible the soft drink industry is being hoisted on its own petard by letting the cost come down so far that the drinks are no longer special. Recall that at the begining soft drinks were tonics to pep one up. (Or in the case of Coke to get some cocaine as well as Caffiene).
