When I moved to Manhattan in the 80s to go to NYU for a year, I paid $700 for an 8 X 10 room in a converted SRO hotel. At the time, I had a boyfriend who paid $400 for a rent-controlled apartment on the Upper West Side. Eight rooms, pre-war. He was a sound guy on big movies and made a lot of money.
