Reader comment on: Republicans and Science

If you truly believe in an active god, than you believe that other that physical and biological process drives events. Recall she said god spoke to her, that is precisely that kind of intervention. It is this logical disconnect that has been around since before Darwin and actually going back to the 15th century. Recall that the basic postulate (i.e. something assumed not capable of being proved) of science is that the processes we see operating in the world today are those that operated otherwhere and otherwhen. Clearly religion in general would not accept this postulate since it reduces god to a watchmaker who set the universe going and fell asleep. This assumption of science is never discussed, yet it was seriously discussed in the period following the publication of the Origin of the Species in 1859, being invented by Charles Lyell and being called uniformitarianism. Now of course there is a question of how long is your period of observation of natural processes, see Bretz and the Spokane Floods for details.
