The man is the worst. You are right that any Republican should be leading, but it was inevitable that any Republican who could survive the primary would have to stake out some ridiculous positions that would weaken him or her in the general election. The radical right wing is going to have to get a grip and follow calmer heads (like Jeb Bush) before it can hope to regain power nationally. Romney is perhaps the worst possible messenger in this election. Also, elections are about choices. While you may be surprised that Obama is running ahead even though he is advocating tax increases, the flip side is that Romney can't pull ahead when he isn't advocating anything other than what Bush did. People still blame Bush for the mess we are in (rightly) and so pledging to return to his policies is lunacy.
