As an Arizona resident, I feel I must weigh in on this at least a little bit.

"To the extent that the law discourages legal and illegal immigration to the US, it is anti-capitalist."

This is a ludicrous statement. One might just as easily say that laws prohibiting the sale of crack cocaine or kidnapping are anti-capitalist.

I think there is a reasonable argument to be made that this law is unconstitutional, because it is the province of the federal government to make foreign policy and protect borders. But this is precisely the catalyst for this law.

The backlash in Arizona is due to the state's exasperation at the failure of the federal government to fulfill its charter - provide for the common defense. Instead the federal government refuses to enforce existing laws and protect the border, at the same time forcing unfunded liabilities on the states. The state Access (health care) system is going broke because of the coverage being extended to illegal aliens (as well as other reasons.)

Ben fails to understand some key issues that have precipitated this bill in Arizona. Phoenix has the highest kidnapping rates in the country and is second in the world! Car insurance in AZ is also quite high, because of the prevalence of theft - proximity to the border. Obviously, other than the additional costs associated with education, health care, insurance, etc, there is also increasing violence associated with the drug trade and coyote smuggling rings. An Arizona rancher was recently murdered on his own land.

I deeply resent the implication that anyone who wants to do something about this problem is a racist xenophobe. Like hell.

I think that all of the immigration kerfuffle is beside the point. IMO, what we need is true immigration reform. Remove quotas, simplify the process for immigration. Basically if you want to come here and be a citizen, you should be able to. If you come from a country that sponsors terrorism - then you may have to go through a more extensive background process, that you should pay for.

Instead, Ben and his ilk want to perpetuate a system that forces large numbers of people to break the law, illegally enter the country, and then be subject to all manner of abuses and exploitation. I don't think his compassion results in positive outcomes - instead it fosters what amounts to modern day slavery.

But this is beside the point, If you break the law - you are by definition - criminal. If you aren't here legally, you have broken the law, and are here "illegally".

For goodness sake, why is enforcing our borders so unthinkable?
