David in Cal is correct, I believe. The first example is clearly and correctly written. Only the third example is clearly wrong. I also learned that the nearest noun governs the rest of the sentence. As grammar is becoming more relaxed lately (the singular "they" has been accepted as the word of the year--I'll paste the link below), all three sentences would pass muster, since their meaning is clear.
