Rich and famous people are leaving high-tax states and moving to Florida. We've been trying to keep track—Jeff Bezos, Billy Joel, Tom Brady, Lionel Messi, Ken Griffin, Carl Icahn, Paul Tudor Jones—but the stampede is so extensive that keeping pace with it can be a challenge. Some recent developments:
Fox News's Sean Hannity announced a permanent move to Florida from New York.
Financial adviser Suze Orman recently explained to the Wall Street Journal: "You know, I was responsible for getting LeBron James and Chris Bosh on the Miami Heat....I met with all the accountants, and I figured out by being a Florida resident, how much more money they would make [without state income taxes]. We videotaped me saying, 'How would you like to make an extra $15 million a year and not play one more game, not do one more endorsement, anything?'"
And the British tabloids are full of speculation that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will leave California for Florida. So far it is just speculation, but the tax math has a powerful logic.
