That reason may have evaporated, but politically it's impossible to discontinue them (Internal politics). It takes an outsider who does not owe anyone on the inside anything to cut things out. Gerstner for example outlawed foils (slides projected during meetings) which appear to have been very important at IBM earlier. Today he might outlaw powerpoint as well.
