taxing sugary drinks is a market solution

Taxing drinks is a far cry from banning them. Sugary drinks help make people fat, fat people have more health problems, many of which result in higher medical bills which are often born by the taxpayer. By raising the price of unhealthy things, we not only recoup revenue to pay for healthcare, we actually make people healthier. Perhaps because this is such common sense, a recent plan put out by a truly bipartisan working group on healthcare including Bob Dole and Tom Daschle suggested just this idea. Raising revenue through sin taxes is far fairer and more logical than many other taxes including a general sales tax.
