You are correct in pointing out the inconsistency of those that normally protest such things. However, (this is probably the only time I have ever defended the man), President Obama provided the typical "public religion" that is integrally woven into our system of government.

I just finished Jon Meacham's book, American Gospel and he talks about the careful bland and generic form, but nonetheless time honored and accepted forms of incorporating God into the public/governmental discourse.

However, the "calm in the midst of the storm" was an interesting allusion to Christianity.
