Manufacturing Consent

Reader comment on: Summers and Schumpeter

Submitted by Sam. (United States), Sep 22, 2009 08:00

Schumpeter, among public opinion scholars, is remembered for doubting (even dismissing) the sophistication of voters and attributing their political preferences to the effects of media and campaign manipulation. Aside from creative destruction, Schumpeter's other big idea was that of "manufacturing consent" (which was ultimately all but appropriated by Chomsky). This too is perhaps also strangely relevant to Obama's admin, given his wily use of media. Maybe Summers should have just stuck with Smith or Keynes..
