The Eastern front of WWII was the main battle, compare the soviet losses to those on the western front. Had Stalin surrendered then it's likely Hitler could have conquered the world. While the western front might have been the straw that broke the camel's back, the Eastern Front was where the weight was. Actually before D-Day the Soviets were marching west, Kursk was the turning point.
