New Harmony In, was one of the places where such a society was tried and failed, there were others at the time and all failed in fairly short order. The Shakers were among the more successful groups, but between state control of adoptions and the movement to the city from the farm began slowly to fail in the late 19th century. Of course the shakers had one more strike against them they had no children.
