I almost missed reading this nugget, about the interview with Jill Lepore and which highlights how government has hurt higher education, because I thought I had that problem well-defined. This piece convinces to read the whole interview, but first, I must comment on Lepore's idea on writing in the second paragraph. Simply put, life for Catholics and Americans in general would be better if Francis, pontiff of the Church, and all Jesuits, as well as lifetime, otherwise unemployable, politicians paid attention to her in this: "Writing is about sharing what you know with storybook clarity, even and especially if you're writing about something that's complicated or morally ambiguous."
