Reader comment on: The Nation on Vacation

Submitted by Lyle (United States), Sep 30, 2010 15:35

European Social democracies have such a law the EU mandates 4-6 weeks vacation for all workers. It even applies in Bonaire for example. In the US people start out if they get any vacation with 2 weeks and it may go up from there.

This does raise the interesting question I have never seen poll results on would people prefer a EU (continental) style social democracy or the us money first society. The questions would have to be carefully constructed as how they are framed would likely affect the results. I suspect at least 40% would go for the social democracy point of view and possibly a majority.

We do need to recall that social democracy was installed in Europe to keep the communists from taking over after WWII when they were the second party in France and Italy. The leading parties made a deal with the people social democracy so they could stay in power.
