Reader comment on: The New York Times Discovers Hayek
in response to reader comment: Hayek on Health Care

Submitted by J Baustian (United States), Oct 4, 2010 15:49

Steve J. wrote, quoting Hayek: "But there is no incompatibility in principle between the state providing greater security in this way and the preservation of individual freedom."

The key words here are "in principle". In principle it is possible for the state to provide health care without impinging on liberty -- possibly with a subsidy to hospitals and clinics that provide emergency treatment. But the history of health care legislation since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid proves that our Congress cannot do what Hayek says is possible.
