If one lives in a city 1 car could well have the 45 mph and 70 mile restriction and not be much of a problem. This is what killed the electrics in the 1990s, the perception that every car needs to be able to go long distances. In a 2 car urban family, this is not the case, and I think the industry never got the point of pushing vehicles that make sense for city use only.
