You say "The Republicans tried to offer an amendment to stop the auto bailout....."

That may be, but I thought George W. Bush, as one of his last stupid acts before he left office, agreed to the auto company bailout.

Indeed, I have blamed Bush for it in prior posts, was just dealing here with the context of this sentence in the New Yorker article, which refers to since Obama was inaugurated.
