Reader comment on: Washington State Rejects 'Rich' Tax

Submitted by CGB2 (United States), Nov 4, 2010 21:19

The rich tax was never going to pass. Not ever. The reason was more than just "We don't trust Olympia." It's extremely difficult to pass a new kind of tax, especially in a recession or just after the worst of a recession. It doesn't make any difference what kind of tax. Oregon doesn't have a sales tax, forcing school districts in particular to rely on the property tax and state aid. So, to diversify the revenue source, there have been a number of ballot measures to allow a sales tax. They've all been killed.
