Partly this is to stop SS payments and avoid having to ding folks for refunds. Of course in many states (Texas being one example) the vital statistics office does not notify the drivers license folks when a person died. When my parents passed they got applications to renew their drivers license in the mail, and in addition because jury summons are based off drivers license data, my late father got called for jury duty. I called the office and said we might be able to arrange a seance if needed but I did not think the judge would approve, they apologized a lot.
