Bernard Bailyn's Ideological Origins of the American Revolution has been a treasured friend for 50 years.

My favorite passage:

"The colonists had no doubt about what power was and about its central, dynamic role in any political system. . . . 'Power' to them meant the dominion of some men over others, the human control of human life: ultimately force, compulsion."
