A lawyer might say. "Rerum Novarum is still good law." That is, the encyclical speaks of the rightly-ordered solidarity of workers and their entitlement to organize in accordance with that right order. It also speaks of private property as a natural right oriented toward the furtherment of family development. Laments the fall of Adam and Eve and properly asserts that these rights are not coterminous with greed, hoarding or lack of concern for our neighbors, but that those with property should devote it for the betterment of their neighbors. Pretty high in the sky, but revolutionary in drawing the Gospel into modern life -- "Rerum Novarum" means "Of New Things" -- and already seeing the Godlessness of socialism. Leo XIII was a great man.
