If you watch Holmes on Homes you see a lot of contractor screw ups. It appears that a lot of folks just don't know what they are doing either on these solar projects or home wiring or plumbing. The cited examples just suggest the contractors were ignorant or stupid or both. But this happens even when folks pay for home improvement themselves. Today it appears you may at most have to pay a fee to get into the home improvement business and not have to know a thing about what you are doing, some of the electrical examples on the show such as junctions behind drywall and the plumbing screwups and indeed cutting joists to run plumbing are just as bad as the cited examples.

It is usually the hidden things that get screwed up as the cosmetic issues are seen and get fixed. So to a homeowner there is no obvious way to tell what is right side up. (But on the tree issue and knowing what is south its just inattention on the part of the homeowner as well, as this sort of thing is obvious. (If you put having access to sunlight and solar panels together.
