Don't forget estate and inheritance taxes

Not to be overlooked is that NY, all the New England states except (of course) New Hampshire, and much of the Midwest/Northeast are the only states - 17 out of 50 - that still have their own inheritance or estate taxes. The other 33 including Florida (and, surprisingly, California) have done away with them if they ever had them at all. For many people, it doesn't make a difference. Their estates won't be that big. But for Billy Joel....
