Reader comment on: Politics and Charitable Giving

Recall that John Kerry and his wife file seperate returns as do John McCain and his wife, as both wives are worth more than their husbands by a good bit. Since they do so, we do not know what the wives gave to charity, but given the larger wealth present there, it makes more sense for the wife to deduct any chariatable gifts due to likely paying taxes at a higher rate. As to the painting it is not clear if his wife gave him the money, which makes comparisons much harder. Teresa Kerry is an heir to the Heinz 57 fortune so she is very well placed to help John out when needed.
