I've followed MLS a lot. Not to say taxes didn't play a role, but the turf (grass) and how close to home (Argentina) would have been very big factors in his decision as well. There have been a number of European players who passed on playing on artificial grass or the west coast due to these factors.

Some European players sign with grass-field teams and then sit on the bench when they travel to artificial turf stadiums. Eventually they come around, but don't under estimate grass in the decision.

I'm sure Messi paid a lot of taxes playing so long in Europe.
