Recall that originally only the elites could vote (property qualification). This went away after the war of 1812. Then in the late nineteenth century we had the populist movement versus the elites the elites liking deflation, and the populist (largely ag) wanting inflation. (The heart of the cross of gold speech was to generate inflation and raise farm prices). Today again we have on many fronts the elites versus the common person, but todays William Jennings Bryan has not yet appeared. The climate change issue is so hot because it has become an elite versus common person issue as well.
