Gold Standard?

C'mon Ira, the gold standard hasn't a snowball's chance in hell. the arguments for it are good, in that random shocks to the gold supply would be preferable--in the long run--to political manipulation of money. But (1) it's a political nonstarter because the arguments are complex and returning to the gold standard will be way too easy to lampoon as a right-wing reactionary fantasy; and (2) if we get on the gold standard, what's to stop politicians from getting off when the going gets tough?
