Ideologues don't get elected or stay in office

The world is not black and white, Ideologues have trouble getting elected, and even if they do they tend to backtrack. While someone like Rand Paul may be as ideologically consistent as they come, even he backs away from many free market positions if he feels like it. And this is a good thing. Democracy relies on people having debates without the answer already assumed. If people are not open to flexibility or the possibility that their ideas are wrong, we are in a lot of trouble.
