Reader comment on: Politics at Oregon State

The matter of Dr. Robinson's three children receiving notice - only a few days after the conclusion of the 2010 mid-term elections - of the university administration's determination to expel each of them from their respective doctoral programs for no specified cause has received considerable attention on the climate skeptic Web log operated by meteorologist Anthony Watts.

At the time of this writing, nearly three hundred comments had been posted on the page in question, in some several of which there are functional links to at least one Oregon State University statement on this matter as well as news items published on the matter.

One of the more puzzlingly rancid aspects of this action is that the OSU expulsions are being undertaken to so completely deprive three individual graduate students with exemplary academic records of the ability each to complete his or her technically exacting doctoral research projects in nuclear engineering as to have made their postgraduate work thus far completed worthless to them while at the same time co-opting each of these students' individual work product created (methodological development, apparatus, observational data) for the professional benefit of OSU faculty members or other, more favored students.

One student thus precipitously expelled might be understandable. Two simultaneously, both from the same family? Well, such things happen. But three such students, all with excellent grade point averages and superior ratings of their work in their chosen disciplines?

Hm. I am moved to recall novelist Ian Fleming's recapitulation of an old military maxim.

"Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times, it's enemy action."
