World War II and the Cold War presented existential threats to our nation. Creeping socialism will result in, at worst, a European style state with universal healthcare, better education and higher taxes. This is a tradeoff that about half the country is willing to make (myself included). I dare say that half the country was not in favor of Hitler or the Soviet Union.
