Give the left their dueReader comment on: Cut Spending on the Rich Submitted by David (United States), May 16, 2011 18:45 The architects of SS knew that a means tested program of social insurance for the elderly would never fly politically and that the system as passed would gather support through dependency despite its political unpopularity when first enacted (ObamaCare, anyone?). Considering SS benefits are scheduled to be reduced by statute once the trust fund is exhausted (now projected for 2036), I would guess that most younger workers who will be most affected by this would have more enthusiasm for making real reforms now. There will be no easy way to save it, but like a person who is in a permanent vegetative state but undoubtedly alive there will be great incentive to keep it alive. My choice would be to kill it, but even for my age (early 40's) no doubt I'm in the minority. Note: Comments are moderated by the editor and are subject to editing. Other reader comments on this item
