The Senate bill will lower the long term deficit (20 years out) by 1 trillion. That doesn't even account for whatever savings may come from the various pilot programs designed to save money. We must cut costs in the insurance system. We can do that by taking away care (as the Republican plan would do) or by reforming the system as the Senate plan would do, or by a single payer system that would save the most money. No matter what one believes about the current system, something is going to have to give. People are either going to get less care (rationing!!!!), pay a whole lot more (rationing in another form), run up larger deficits or all of the above. Most likely it will be all of the above, but the sooner we tackle the problem the easier the transition will be. If only there were a few politicians more eager in solving the problem than winning reelection. . .
