Of course if you go for a PhD that's the whole basic point you have to teach yourself because there is no one to teach you. But BS and to some extent MS does not do enough of this, and the demise of the term paper makes it harder to learn how to learn since now you just buy it on the net. (Also the web may mean that learning is not a thorough as in the days of going to a physical library).

If you have not learned how to be your own teacher you will not succeed in today's environment. As an example I have an MS in Geophysics, and then had to learn Exploration Geophysics when I started working (similar basics but a lot of more detail), and then moved over to the computer side over 20 years. I read a lot of books to learn about computers to do this.
