Here is a link to a cbo document on the age distribution of federal workers: http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/78xx/doc7874/03-15-Federal_Personnel.pdf The median age is 47 and a significant percentage will retire in the next ten years. (Similar to petroleum where no hiring occured 1986 to about 2000). For federal employees they typically retire with 25 to 29 years of service and in 2009 the average service was 16 years, so there will be a lot of retirements coming. One hopes that hiring will not be done on a rush basis at the time, and some transition time will occur.
