According to the repo36% of those without health insurance make over 50k a year. So they have chosen to gamble (which is not really surprising given the number that visit casinos or play the lottery or the various undercover illegal gambling operations). The issue with pre-existing conditions is however real, consider for example if Rush Limbaugh were not filthy rich he could not get regular health insurance given his conditions.
