Reader comment on: Obama's Immigration Angle

I hope the Politico story is correct. Immigration has become, like

Social Security, a third-rail in politics. There will be no 'comprehensive'

immigration legislation because 'comprehensive' is a code word for

giving amnesty to the 12 million illegals already here and the majority of

voters oppose it. Indeed, some polls even show a majority of legal immigrants

opposing amnesty for their illegal brethen. Immigration reform cannot happen

without Republican support and Republican voters learned their lesson when

Reagan, in 1986, gave amnesty to 3 million illegals in exchange for closing the

borders to further illegals, which, of course, never happened. Even McCain, once

a strong supporter of amnesty, is now against it until the border is closed to illegals.

All of the legislation in coming years will be at the state level, with states enacting

laws that make life uncomfortable for anyone here illegally. Irrespective of court

challenges funded by immigrant groups, the courts won't be able to hold back the

tide at the state level of anti-illegal laws. If Obama is silly enough to push for laws

favorable to illegals he will only add to the reasons for people to vote against him.

He's made a mess of everything else he's touched, so why not immigration ! What

he should be doing is pushing for much higher quotas for legal immigrants with

advanced degrees in engineering and the sciences who have become essential to

the growth of the high tech industry.
