Recall that TR called the lords of finance the Malefactors of Great Wealth. Consider Jay Gould and the attempted corner of the gold market (I think he would be an investment banker or hedge fund type today), let alone the manipulations of the stock of the Erie Railroad. The bankers were blamed in the 1930s for the troubles then. I guess the way to put it if you want the big bucks you need to expect to be hated, so you did get paid for it.
